SKOPE celebrates decade of partnering with Haier
In an age where business relationships, and often businesses themselves, seem to come and go, SKOPE Industries is proud to be celebrating its ten-year partnership with Chinese manufacturer Haier.
This month, the SKOPE brand is recognised as one of the greatest commercial refrigeration brands worldwide. Haier, the world’s largest manufacturer in white goods, and SKOPE, recently celebrated the ten-year anniversary of their relationship with an event in Qingdao, China, attended by SKOPE founder Sir Robert Stewart and his son, SKOPE Managing Director Guy Stewart and Alexandra Stewart, the company’s Creative Director.
Early in the 21st Century, SKOPE recognised that in order to survive and grow, the Christchurch-based company with an international reputation for producing high quality commercial refrigeration would need to travel the world and sell its products where it could. It was decided that the solution was to find a manufacturing partner that had the ability to leverage economies of scale, but that also understand the importance of quality as a key point of difference in an increasingly competitive market. Haier was the perfect partner.
Sir Robert, who has now retired but sits on the board of the Stewart’s family-owned company, says he is a passionate believer in the importance of a brand and the 80:20 rule, which says you can get 80 per cent of the market with the best quality and best priced products, and 20 per cent requires a different luxury brand to meet the demands of customers who want to be perceived to own something that is better. The relationship with Haier enables SKOPE to strive for that 80 per cent market share. “I believe that Haier has the potential to dominate all levels of electrical appliances, particularly refrigeration, both domestic and commercial,” says Sir Robert Stewart.
For the 20 per cent markets, such as Coca Cola and 7-Eleven, Sir Robert says SKOPE knows how to design commercial refrigeration that fulfils these global requirements. In response to other corporate and customer demands, in September SKOPE will launch its revolutionary new ActiveCore™ technology that is being manufactured by Haier, but has been designed in Christchurch at SKOPE’s innovation and design centre. "It is the ultimate innovation, and a major leap forward for our industry", says Sir Robert. Each and every component of the ActiveCore™ unit has been developed with energy efficiency in mind. ActiveCore™ technology will reduce energy costs for the customer; provide users with a quicker rate of return and save over 50 per cent when compared to SKOPE’s current biggest selling two-door chiller. This equates to savings of nearly $600 per annum, a huge feat in engineering for SKOPE.
Guy Stewart, who took over the role of managing director from his father, Sir Robert Stewart, in 2002, says the future competitive landscape in commercial refrigeration is going to evolve to be a mixture of energy efficiency, product features, greater serviceability, minimal noise, with maximum customer engagement and price.
“This equates to a value proposition, and we are well positioned to create solutions for this together with Haier using our combined talents. This will be key for global corporate customers, who want to invest value solutions for themselves,” says Mr Stewart.

Sir Robert Stewart releases autobiography Determined to Win
“Sir Robert Stewart may have been born into a successful manufacturing family, but he had to set up his own company the hard way, using his own money, courage, street smarts and creativity”, from Determined to Win.
2014 has been a year of milestones for SKOPE founder Sir Robert Stewart, who earlier in the year was made a Knight Companion of the NZ Order of Merit to manufacturing and the community. Last month, Sir Robert struck another goal off his “bucket list”, when he launched his autobiography, Determined to Win, published by Random House.
Sir Robert’s account of starting SKOPE, manufacturing, exporting and holding on to the family business is a lively memoir in which he shares insights into being successful in one of the most challenging business environments. It tells the story of a man who, over five decades, led the business through economic ups and downs, tough times and highlights, to become one of New Zealand’s leading manufacturers and exporters.
A dedicated husband, father and grandfather, between times spent in the office, on the factory floor and building partnerships and reputation offshore, Sir Robert has led a fulfilling life outside of SKOPE – racing cars and building yachts and enjoying his recreational pursuits with his wider family and friends. Along the way, he has started a radio station, helped drive the 1974 Commonwealth Games, become president of the Canterbury Medical Research Foundation, and chair of the Canterbury Manufacturer’s Association and the government’s Health Research Council. He has also been honoured as an Ernst & Young Master Entrepreneur.
“I’ve enjoyed reading the history of Dad’s professional career, it’s half a James Bond story and half a business text book. I more fully appreciate the difficult barriers to market he encountered and appreciate now how complex entrepreneurism was in his day,” says daughter Alexandra Stewart.
An entrepreneur who has never been afraid to think outside the square, Sir Robert left school at 15 to take up an apprentice electrician role with the Government, going on to work at Christchurch Airport and at Paparua prison. His passion later took him to England, where he studied engineering at Cranfield College. On his return to New Zealand, Sir Robert worked for his father’s company, PDL Industries, for five years.
At 25, Sir Robert purchased Christchurch-based Robat Avon Industries, which he rebranded to SKOPE Enterprises. It was from here that he went on to build the country’s leading heating company, expanding the business to include commercial refrigeration products and building an international export market.
Having exited the heating market, today SKOPE Industries is a global player in the commercial refrigeration market. Two of Sir Robert’s children, Guy and Alexandra, share their father’s drive and passion for the family business and have taken over the helm of SKOPE, which now employs more than 300 people and has a far-reaching global presence. Sir Robert remains an active member of the company’s Board and is thrilled to have his book hit the shelves.

Introducing SKOPE's Online Portfolio
High quality, in-situ imagery combined with case studies, displays SKOPE’s ability to create and implement unique refrigeration solutions.
From restaurants, cafés and bars to hotels, stadiums, airports, commercial institutes and food processing facilities, when it comes to the types of businesses using commercial refrigeration, the requirements are varied and often unique.
At SKOPE, our brand and business focuses on excellence. We take immense pride in our products and ability to work with the industry to create and implement refrigeration solutions into virtually any design specifications. In order to portray both the aesthetic and functional ways in which refrigeration can be integrated into a wide range of environments we developed an industry leading Project Portfolio application.
To complement this, and enable users to view, share, Pin, download and save our most visually compelling case studies, we have carefully curated and repackaged our project portfolio into an easy to navigate online collection. Complete with downloadable PDFs and the option to Pin, Email or save each case study, we are making it easy for users to share their inspirations.
The high quality, in-situ imagery, combined with descriptions of the customers' business nature, displays SKOPE's extensive product range and ability to deliver products to suit each individual's exact specifications and requirements.
A stunning example from SKOPE's extensive portfolio is Sydney's exquisitely designed Steel Bar & Grill. Every aspect of Steel Bar & Grill is inspiring, from the polished stainless steel mesh to the open plan kitchen, complete with dark, marble benchtops. With space at a premium, the team behind Steel Bar & Grill wanted a kitchen that was on show to diners and state-of-the-art both aesthetically and functionally.
Working with designer Michael McCann, SKOPE helped plan the open kitchen with the key objective to create clean lines and practical, efficient use of space. Front of house, counterline refrigeration has been selected for its lower height, with SKOPE and McCann developing the stunning 'dreamtime' doors, with their thicker frames and chunkier handles. Downstairs at Steel Espresso, a custom SKOPE food display takes pride of place on top of a counterline cabinet.

SKOPE opens new environmental test chamber
On Thursday 22 November, the Minister of Science and Innovation, Hon. Steven Joyce officially opened SKOPE’s new environmental test chamber.
Ever since Robert Stewart, started SKOPE in 1965, research, design and innovation has been behind the company’s competitive advantage and continued success.
Last financial year SKOPE achieved over $100m revenue, was a finalist in the New Zealand International Business Awards and was listed by the Technology Investment Network as the sixth technology company by growth in the country.
This success is attributed to SKOPE’s employees, who bring enthusiasm and passion to their job every day and strive for excellence, as well as continued investment in new product development, innovation, on-going research and strategic relationships built with Haier in China, Busung in Korea and more recently Irinox and MISA in Italy.
SKOPE’s new environmental test chamber, which is built from MISA cool room panels, will enable increased testing capacity, ensure faster project turnaround times and improve testing accuracy.
It will allow SKOPE to test from 3 to 50 degrees in up to 95% humidity, meaning almost any environment can be simulated. This is important when refrigeration cabinets need to perform at the highest standard in some of the harshest environments in the world, such Darwin and the Middle East. Testing in these conditions not only means consumers get a cold drink every time, but more importantly ensures food and safety standards are met, and exceeded, at all times.
Victoria/Tasmania FIA Finalist
SKOPE has been nominated as a finalist in the FIA Distributor of the Year - Service Award.
“I am very proud and excited about the nomination as there is an impressive field of finalists. The team works incredibly hard and to reach finalist stage is a testament to SKOPE’s commitment to quality and customer service,” National Sales Manager, Brady Wiseman says.
Winners will be announced on the 9th November 2012.
SKOPE continue to stand behind our products and superior in-home warranties.
We will honour all existing commitments, and expect to be able to supply product for the majority of our range through to the end of winter 2012 and (in many cases) beyond. As a company SKOPE Industries Limited will continue to operate, with our manufacturing operations remaining based in Christchurch. We are excited about a future in which we will dedicate 100% commitment to commercial refrigeration.
Depend on us to stand behind our warranties
A process is in place to honour any product warranty claims during their validity period.

Update: Message to customers
12pm Tuesday 8 March 2011
Thank you all for your support and thoughts. The past two weeks has been a major challenge for our city, our community and our company, and has been a time where the human spirit shows what it is capable of in the best sense.
While our city has been under siege with rescue workers and support from all over the world achieving extraordinary feats within the city, SKOPE has been focused on getting itself operational as quickly as possible. My excellent team achieved this within a week and we are now fully operational with orders being shipped without hitch at all times. They have done an excellent job, and one that I am proud of.
I have been asked by many customers what they can do to help us during this time of crisis, and my response has been two-fold:
- Understand that we are very much in business and operating normally.
- Give us orders to keep our morale up and keep us busy.
Watching the television it is easy to wonder how Christchurch can ever recover from the devastation that has hit it, but it will of course, just as many other previously earthquake damaged cities have. My job is to ensure that the 350 plus people we have working for us in Christchurch, and the multiple suppliers we have based here too, are able to return to as normal a life as possible to give them a place of stability in their lives where they may have lost loved ones, or their homes may be badly damaged or destroyed. Morale and daily focus are critical at times like this.
There is the ancient Chinese curse "may you live in interesting times" and as Christchurch will tell you, as well as flood affected Australia, "stability and normality" are much better prospects than "interesting" and we would greatly appreciate your support in regaining a complete "business as normal" position as quickly as possible.
R. Guy Stewart
